Joanne Macgregor’s Psychological Thriller Dark Whispers Launched at Bibliophilia

Joanne Macgregor

The stark background of Table Mountain, the towering minaret of the local mosque and the dramatic wall art of the Side Street Studios created a suitably theatrical setting for the launch of Joanne Macgregor‘s Dark Whispers, at Cape Town’s newest independent book shop, Bibliophilia on Wednesday night. This multi-faceted author, who has previously published a number of YA novels, was joined by editor Danél Hanekom in an intriguing conversation.

Danél Hanekom and Joanne MacgregorDark WhispersMacgregor, who practises as a counselling psychologist, has published five other books. She spoke about this, her first foray into adult fiction and the work process that enables her to separate the different parts of her life. She writes and consults on different days in order to apply the focus these different activities require of her.

Years ago Macgregor had read an utterly chilling news report from Australia and couldn’t put it out of her mind. She had felt compelled to explore the mind of the “Butcher of Bega” through the medium of fiction. She hastened to add that no character in this book has ever appeared in her rooms, nor will any client ever appear in any book she writes.

Macgregor cut an elegant figure as she read a passage from Dark Whispers. The voice of the malevolent Dr Trotteur recalled a chilling incident from his traumatic childhood, and cut through the balmy Cape evening. The narrator grasped all who’d gathered at the book event and transported them instantly to a place of visceral recoil. It was a profoundly thrilling dip into the darkest of minds and many eagerly bought the book to discover the next installment of this gripping tale.
