Die Antwoord’s music video for I Fink U Freeky, which was co-directed by Ninja and Roger Ballen, has just won a second international award.
The first was the Music Video Grand Prix award given to them at the Curtas Vila do Conde International Film Festival in Portugal earlier this year. The video has also now won the Best Music Video award at the 20th anniversary of the Plus Camerimage International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
The video was included in the recent Roger Ballen/Die Antwoord exhibition held at the Erdmann Contemporary Gallery in Cape Town. The gallery has made all the images available for viewing online. Earlier this year, Ballen discussed his collaboration with the Die Antwoord on this music video.

Protea Boekhuis kondig met trots aan dat Johann Lodewyk Marais ‘n Suid-Afrikaanse Literêre Toekenning (SALA) ontvang het in die afdeling vir Afrikaans digkuns vir sy bundel Diorama.

“Diorama bevat van die mees deurdagte gedigte oor die natuur en die mens se verhouding met die natuur wat die afgelope jare in Afrikaans verskyn het. Die bundel is goed gebalanseer deurdat dit op verskillende wyses, in verskillende afdelings en deur middel van ‘n groot verskeidenheid digterlike vorme die leser uitdaag om betrokke te raak en verantwoordelikheid te neem vir verskeie vraagstukke met betrekking tot natuurbewaring en die natuurlike lewe in Suid-Afrika en die res van Afrika.

My Big Shouting Day deur Rebecca Patterson, wat deur Protea Boekhuis in Afrikaans uitgegee is as My groot skree-dag, is met die Roald Dahl Funny Prize 2012 bekroon.
Altesaam 500 leerders van skole regoor die Vereingde Koninkryk het die boeke op die kortlys gelees en dan vir hul gunsteling gestem. Dit is met die stemme van die volwasse beoordelaars gekombineer en so is die twee wenners bekroon. Dark Lord: The Teenage Years deur Jamie Thomson het in die kategorie vir 7 tot 14-jariges gewen en My Big Shouting Day het met die louere weggestap in die kategorie vir kinders onder die ouderdom van 6.
Veels geluk aan Patterson!
A book about a dark lord who unwillingly inhabits the body of a chubby teenager has cast its evil spell over this year’s Roald Dahl Funny Prize judges. Dark Lord: Teenage Years by Brighton-based games developer Jamie Thomson, conquered the competition to seize the winners prize for the funniest book for children aged seven to fourteen.
Equally terrifying is a book about a toddler terrorising her mother and everybody around her with her tantrums. My Big Shouting Day by Cambridge based author/illustrator Rebecca Patterson has stomped its way to victory in the six and under category.

Land artist Strijdom van der Merwe has emerged as the winner of the Sculpture and Installation category in the It’s Liquid international art, design and photography contest.
The winners in each of the five categories, selected from over 300 entries, will receive prizes to the value of €20 000, including one year of international representation and exhibitions. A recent offering from Protea, Sculpting the Earth, showcases the best of Strijdom van der Merwe’s art. Congratulations to him!
The Jury selected 5 winners one for each category, and 15 honorable mentions, 3 for each category, selected following the criteria of quality of the work, originality, uniqueness. It’s LIQUID Group received more than 300 subscriptions from all over the world.

Protea Boekhuis is proud to announced that three of our books, The Boers in Angola, 1928-1975 by Nicol Stassen, Prophet without Honour: FS Malan – Afrikaner South African and Cape liberal by FA Mouton and A South African Censor’s Tale by Kobus van Rooyen, have made the longlist for the 2012 Sunday Times Alan Paton Award for non-fiction.
The 41 titles on this year’s longlist are vying for the first prize of R75 000. Good luck to Stassen, Mouton and Van Rooyen!

Apollon Borisovich Davidson, author of the classic work Cecil Rhodes and His Time, has been announced as the recipient of a 2012 National Order, to be bestowed upon him by President Jacob Zuma on Freedom Day, 27 April.
According to a statement issued by the Presidency, Davidson will be awarded an Order of the Companions of OR Tambo in Silver “for being an integral part of the anti-apartheid movement, and his exceptional contribution to the struggle for the eradication of apartheid and to the development of a post-apartheid, free and democratic South Africa.”
Davidson was born in 1929. He obtained his Master degree in History at the Leningrad University in 1953 and his PhD at the Institute of Universal History in 1958. In 1971 he obtained his second doctoral degree at the Institute for Asian and African Studies, at the Moscow Lomonosov University.
Davidson is a prominent Russian Africanist, the author of seven monographs, and the editor of numerous books on Southern and Tropical Africa. He is also the author of several articles and a number of University syllabuses on African history. Davidson was the first to lecture on African History in Moscow Lomonossov University, where he has been lecturing since 1962.
In 1993 he published Cecil Rhodes and His Time with Protea Boekhuis, which drew praise from around the world:

Die Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns het Vrydag hul gesogte jaarlikse pryse en erepennings toegeken.
Protea Boekhuis het met trots verneem dat Amelia de Vaal se vertaling van Die lewe en werke van Kabouters en Die oproep van die Kabouters met die Elsabe Steenbergprys vir Vertaalde Kinder- en Jeugliteratuur in Afrikaans bekroon is. Die musiekdiva Amanda Strydom, wie se bundel liedtekste, Kaalvoet, ook deur Protea Boekhuis uitgegee word, het die Erepenning vir Ligte Afrikaanse Musiek ontvang.

Die Belgiese kinderboekskrywer, Bart Moeyaert, wie se boek Broers deur Protea Boekhuis in Afrikaans vertaal en uitgegee is, het die kortlys vir die internasionale Hans Christian Andersen-prys 2012 gehaal.
Die prys word elke tweede jaar deur IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People) aan ‘n skrywer en illustreerder toegeken vir die blywende bydrae wat hul werk in geheel aan kinderlektuur lewer. Die wenners sal Maandag in Bologna by hul internasionale kinderboekfees (bekend as die de Fiera del Libro per Ragazzi) bekend gemaak word.
Die beoordelaars meen Moeyaert beeld sterk karakters op ‘n subtiele manier uit en skep ‘n poëtiese atmosfeer met ‘n kombinasie van humor en erns in sy taalgebruik.
“Het is spannend,” het Moeyart oor sy benoeming aan Protea Boekhuis gesê. Hy was in 2002 ook ‘n finalis vir die Hans Christian Andersen-prys. Moeyart is ook al ses keer genomineer vir die Internasionale Astrid Lindgren-prys en sy boeke is reeds in 19 tale vertaal.

Five authors and five illustrators have been selected from 57 candidates submitted by 32 national sections of IBBY for the 2012 Hans Christian Andersen Award. The award, considered the most prestigious in international children’s literature, is given biennially by the International Board on Books for Young People to a living author and illustrator whose complete works have made lasting contributions to children’s literature. The winners will be announced on Monday, March 19th at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. The five short-listed authors in alphabetical order are:
María Teresa Andruetto from Argentina is a master of creating sensitive books, which are deep and poetic and relate to a great variety of topics.
Paul Fleischman from the USA makes an innovative and unique contribution to the literature for children. The jury especially appreciated his ability to create characters and to integrate music in his work.
Bart Moeyaert from Belgium presents subtle depictions of strong characters by evoking poetical atmospheres using a language that combines both humour and seriousness.
Jean-Claude Mourlevat from France writes for children and teenagers on many different levels, from poetic prose to fantasy or to realism; music is a constant source of inspiration for him.
Bianca Pitzorno from Italy uses imaginative and diverse texts to share complicity with her readers, using humour and a skilful construction of characters.

Louis Esterhuizen het vroeër vanjaar die Proteaprys vir Poësie gewen vir sy bundel Wat die water onthou. In die toespraak wat Esterhuizen by die ontvangs van die prys gelewer het, het hy gevra dat mense die digkuns moet ondersteun.
Bibi Slippers het met hom oor die prys en oor sy pleidooi vir die digkuns uitgevra. In ‘n onderhoud vir LitNet sê Esterhuizen dat “beter verkope bykans ál die probleme wat so dikwels met die poësie geassosieer word, uit die weg sou ruim.”
Dag Louis. Eerstens, baie geluk met die Protea-prys wat jy ontvang het vir Wat die water onthou. Ek sien die boek is terug op Protea se lys topverkopers, so ‘n mens kon aflei literêre pryse moedig die verkope van digbundels aan? En is dit ‘n goeie ding?
Dankie vir die vriendelike woorde, Bibi. En ja, ek reken tog dat die hernude blootstelling wat op so iets volg, wel nuwe belangstelling wek. Lesers wat ten tye van ’n bundel se verskyning dit dalk gemis het,vir welke rede ook al, mag dan voel om dit wel aan te skaf en te lees. En daarvoor is ’n mens dankbaar.

Leon de Kock het pas ‘n Suid-Afrikaanse Letterkundeprys (SALA) vir sy vertaling van Cas Vos se gedigte in die bundel Intimitely Absent ontvang.
In ‘n onderhoud met Louis Esterhuizen op Versindaba skryf De Kock sy sukses met die vertaling van Vos se werk toe aan die goeie verstandhouding wat tussen hulle bestaan. “As ek sy liefdesverse vertaal, gooi ek so klein bietjies asyn by…en hy hou daarvan!…Ons twee se aanslag is fundamenteel anders. Dis hoekom ons so goed saamwerk.”
De Kock het meer onlangs saam met Vos aan die bundel Duskant die donker / Before it darkens gewerk en hulle beplan verdere samewerking in die toekoms.
Leon, ten eerste: Veels geluk met die SALA-toekenning wat jy pas ontvang het vir Intimately Absent (2010: Protea Book House); gedigte van Cas Vos wat jy na Engels vertaal het. Hierdie prys is welverdiend en gee inderdaad ook erkenning aan die enorme bydrae wat jy as vertaler lewer om die Afrikaanse letterkunde aan ‘n groter publiek bekend te stel. Ook is dit nie die eerste prys wat jy met jou vertaalwerk inpalm nie. In welke mate verskil dié een vir jou van die vorige bekronings wat jy vir jou vertaalwerk ontvang het?
Hierdie prys is baie PC! Dit kom van die regering se kant af, en is polities baie inklusief, met ‘transparent’ prosesse van beoordeling ens. ens. Die geld kom ten minste deels van die departement Arts & Culture, and my, do they dish it out! R30,000! Goeie genugtig! Ek wou ‘n nuwe motorfiets koop, maar weereens – soos altyd – sal die geld gebruik word vir die opvoeding van my twee wonderbaarlik-slim en kreatiewe kinders, wat daarop aandring dat hulle op UK studeer!
De Kock het aan The New Age vertel dat dit vir hom ‘n groot eer is om hierdie nasionale toekenning in ontvangs te neem. Die erkenning spoor hom aan tot verdere kreatiewe werk:
Well-known veteran Prof Leon de Kock, from the English Department at Stellenbosch University, has scooped a South African literary award in the category of literary translation. He received the award for his English rendition of a cycle of poems by Cas Vos, entitled Intimately Absent (in Afrikaans, Intieme Afwesige), based on the Abelard and Héloïse saga.
De Kock will receive a trophy and certificate at the official SA Literary Awards (Sala) ceremony to be held on December 8 as well as a cash prize of R30000.
